Social media has given us the ability to share ideas, feelings, and information at unbelievable speed. We can now communicate faster and wither greater efficiency with our lecturers and professors. Students can utilize social media by posting, sharing notes and lectures online, or watch a video pertaining to a yesterday’ history class. Social media is not jut limited to students, but many professors are now communicating with their students and peers via online. But social media is so much more. It enables students to attend lectures and classes who are half way around the world through the use of social media. It also allows professors and students to conduct meetings online. A social networking website is an online platform that allows users to create a public profile and interact with other users on the website. Social networking websites usually have a new user input a list of people with whom they share a connection and then allow the people on the list to confirm or deny the connection.

Social network is a platform for people share their ideals, to meet new friends and to reconnect with old friends. Social networking sites offer people new and varied ways to communicate via the internet, whether through their PC or their mobile phone. Examples include MySpace, Facebook, Skype etc. They allow people to easily and simply create their own online page or profile and to construct and display an online network of contacts, often called ‘friends’. Users of these sites can communicate via their profile both with their ‘friends’ and with people outside their list of contacts. With Social networking sites (SNS) it is easy to communicate with your classmate, discuss class assignment and even submit project to lecturer, watch videos, make comment on a friend page etc. The effect of SNS usage will depend on the type of SNS the student is using, if student uses the internet for the purpose of leisure activity that interferes with academic, it will affect the student academic performance negatively.
This study focused on the effect of SNS on student academic performance, using quantitative and qualitative method. Why students use social networking sites does it affect their studies, or help them to learn easily. The study focused on the wider impacts and benefits of social networking sites in terms of communication with friends and family, meeting new people, personal expression, and academic performance of the students and the implications on the use of SNS based on the results. The 20 questions personally designed and sent to about 50 students in the College of Education, CLSU.
Review of Related Studies and Literature
This chapter presents the related literature and other related studies which bear significance to the present study. These are necessary in the analysis and interpretation of data found in this study. Different researchers have conducted research to ascertain the influence of social media on users; Moon (2011) in a study on “Impact of Facebook on Undergraduate Academic Performance” claims that social media have negative impact on students. According to the result, the more students use Facebook, the more it affects their academic performance. Oye (2012) notes that the most of the younger students use SNS mainly for socializing activities rather than for academic purposes. On the contrary, Oye (2012) observe that the most of the students do feel that social media have more positive impacts on their academic performance. In another study conducted by Shana (2012) it was revealed that students use SNS mainly for making friends and chatting.
The results showed that only 26 percent of the students indicated that they use of social networking sites for academic purposes. Young (2006) in a study entitled, “The Effects of Internet Use and Social Capital on the Academic Performance on Students” observed that the internet expand its reach to teenager’s school life. Young noted that the students are more reliant on the internet to access information that is involved in school life as well as entertainment. The researcher further added that internet, though consumes time, and has less effect on studies. Yang (2003) notes the effect of social media depends large on the usage. Yoon (2000) observed that the type of social media or network subscribed to by a teenager exerts influence on him or her to visit the internet. Jeong (2005) noted that internet addiction is significant and negatively related to student’s academic performance, as well as emotional.

The researchers were persuaded to conduct a study on the effects of social networking sites on the academic performance of students. The setting for this study was conducted at the College of Education, Central Luzon State University. The reason for conducting this study is to investigate the various effects of social media on the academic performance of the students in CED. This study focused on the effect of SNS on student academic performance, using quantitative and qualitative method.
