I believe that the school day for students should begin at 10:00am rather than the current time of 8:20am. If this were to go into effect immediately, students’ grades would improve, parents would be happier, and life would be easier for everyone.
First of all, if the school day began at 10:00am, students’ grades would probably improve. I feel this way, because many students have jobs after school or, are involved in extracurricular activities. There are chores that need to be done around the house, homework that must be done, and students are simply exhausted after a long day at school and/or work. Students would be more alert after an extra hour of sleep, therefore, grades would increase and test scores would be higher.
Secondly, I believe that more parents would get to work on time because they would not have to wait on their dawdling children. They also would not have to worry about being stuck in Fayetteville’s “nerve wracking” traffic and they may even be able to read the morning newspaper in peace.
Last but not least, teachers could possibly have flexible work schedules if the school day began at 10:00am each day. This would not only enable them to get more work done, but they too, would be more alert and ready to teach. As we all know, teachers have a lot of work to do, but they just don’t have the time.
Finally, a school day that started at 10:00am rather than 8:20am would result in better grades, happier parents, and more productive teachers. This is an idea that I think administrators should consider, discuss, implement for years to come.
