1.1 Explain why positive relationships with children /young people are important and how these are built and maintained?
Positive relationships are important because they help children develop independence, self esteem and wellbeing. Children will feel confident, secure and be able to trust their relationship with adults in turn learning to trust their own decisions. As Maslow’s Theory explains this is the basis of a Childs development, feeling of belonging, support, safety and positive relationships.
These are built and maintained by being comforting and reassuring children and young people when need it. To give praise for good behaviour, progress and guidance when required. Being consistent in your approach and being responsive and respectful to children’s individual needs, likes and dislikes. Planning activities and sessions with every child in mind. Adapting your own behaviour to the child’s preference, mood and situation. Modelling good behaviours, manners and respectfulness.
1.2 Evaluate your own effectiveness in building relationships with children / young people?
I consider myself to be warm and friendly. I am good at reading a room and can adapt my own personality to what the environment / situation requires at that time making CYP feel comfortable. I feel I pay attention to a Childs engagement with me and actively listen. I am aware of my body language and how a child may perceive this. I feel that I am consistent with my approach and respectful of young people’s ideas and input. With all this in mind I feel I am effective at building relationships with CYP. At times my own inhibitions may limit my play work with some of the more imaginative play young people.
