A paradigm change is basically a transformation of a standard, model, or pattern to something that is entirely different (PrimaryPerception. com, 2009).
In organizations, it could mean a significant change in planning or strategies while in people, it could mean a change in one’s point of view or how one sees the world. In other words, a paradigm change mainly involves a major overhaul or revamp of a certain set of standards or set of patterns (Answers. com, 2009) although its applications and definitions may vary depending on the subject involved.
In general both organizations and individuals alike have problems with paradigm changes. In organizations, it is sometimes difficult to handle a paradigm change because it may involve a total transformation in terms of business strategies, techniques, operations, mission, and vision, among others. Since it involves major changes, organizations may sometimes find it hard to adapt to them which is why problems arise. For example, a conservative marketing strategy that is suddenly transformed into a liberal one may not yield the desired results, posing problems to the company.
Moreover, a paradigm change can be more dramatic among individuals as it involves changes in one’s point of view. Just like in organizations, the person may find it hard adjusting to the paradigm change especially if he or she has grown accustomed to the old standards or ideologies. For example, a certain individual who views the economy or the market using the principles and beliefs of Karl Marx may be caught off-guard by new and modern economic ideas that are being applied today.
In other words, the main reason behind the problems in paradigm shifts is that it is hard to deviate or to sway from the norms that one has followed throughout his entire life. References Answers. com. (2009).
