In this short story called “The Lottery”, on June 27th, in this pleasant village, the villagers came together for their annual ceremony they have every year. The lottery concentrates on the village and the day of their annual Lottery. Although , The Lottery is always hosted by Mr. Summer every year , the persistence of “The Lottery” is to ensure that the village has enough rain to see good corn crop for the following June . The village is very small; the children arrive first and began collecting stones until everyone is ready. Mr. Summers calls each head of the household to the black wooden box, where each selects a slip of paper to pick in the wooden box. Mr. Summer lets everyone open their paper and see who has been selected. In this story there are many symbols but the ones I am focusing on is The Box, The Lottery and The Stone this symbol are very important in this short story. The shabby black box is a symbol of tradition in the village. The box is the key to life and death for each of the villagers.
The black box is falling apart hardly even black the color of the box is a symbol for death and evil because the villagers are picking a name out of it to try to stone the other person. This black old fashion box with all these marks on it is for evil, after years of use. But the villagers are not ready to give something so value up so fast these are parts of the village tradition, which no one wants to leave the lottery and give the box up. The lottery has always been done this way. However, the lottery tradition has never been changed or forgotten .Mr. summer is the boss of the shabby box, the villagers use slips of paper to put the box. The shabby box is everything to the villagers. Action, behavior and understanding is what the lottery symbolize. The lottery is passed down to the next generation. The lottery has a lot of remember from the past, the lottery has been taking place in the village for a very long time, and it is a tradition to the villagers as annual ceremony.
Even though the lottery ridiculous, unusual, and cruel it is a part of the town’s culture and you can say the religion as well. The villagers are absolutely loyal to it however the lottery continues because they have always been a lottery every year. The outcome of this tradition is that everyone becomes a part of a murder that happens in this village on this annual day. The lottery is very dangerous because of what happen. Moreover, it is dangerous that the traditions of the new generation of the village don’t ask any questions of what’s going to happen to them. The Stone symbolize the village and the villagers. Although stoning is a disturbing look for anyone in the village, it’s an assembly of death. However, stoning give anyone in the village a chance to stone of the villagers. The stones are used as a murder weapon from the youngest to the oldest person involved.
Stoning has a strong religion with the village. In additionally stoning is ejecting to an outsider to strengthen group’s politics. Your family would not want to be the ones getting stoned which is a scary site. The stones play a big part in this story. In Conclusion, this story is awful and surprising to me because of how it all started. The lottery teaches the young children how to murder and torture innocent people. Who would imagine that one of the villagers are about to get stoned. Nevertheless, these nice people in a pleasant town start killing one of their villagers. The symbol in this story is the ragged box of death, the lottery that symbolizes the action and behavior of the villagers and finally the stones that’s symbolized the village and villager. Who in their right mind wants to stone one of their villager’s?
