Research has showed that having a positive attitude and optimism tends to increase life span and helps have a greater resistance to colds. A positive attitude is a person’s disposition towards life in a manner that shows optimism .One’s attitude towards anything in life can affect the outcome. If a person has a consistent negative attitude in life– no hope, no real goal, no purpose, and then that person will go exactly in that direction. A positive attitude is one that gives hope and purpose. It’s a willing heart and joyful spirit no matter the situation. Positive attitude and thinking can drive anyone to success and happiness. My aunt was applying for CNA job and she was negatively thinking the entire day and was worried about not getting the job. I talked to her and told her that she would get the job and that I had faith in her. The next day she woke up confident and went to her interview. When she arrived, the receptionist thought that she came to apply for the janitor position because of her race. She told the lady that she had an appointment for the CNA position, but she wasn’t listening. Instead, she told her to go sit down in the waiting room and treated with her no respect.
My aunt didn’t treat her the same way she did but with a lot of respect and did as she was told. She sat in that waiting room for 2 hours waiting for her interview, and to be called up. After waiting for those 2 hours, the employer came looking for her and she asked the receptionist if she had already came and she told the employer that she was in the waiting room and when she asked why she told her that she thought she was here for the janitor position. The employer was infuriated not only because she made my aunt wait 2 hours in the waiting room, but also at how she treated her with so much disrespect. The employer went up to my aunt and apologized for the way she was treated and asked her if she was still up for the job and she said she was, so the employer told her she got the job because she is the kind of the person they need she said “you have the patience and the attitude I am looking for.”
After she was done with her interview, while making her way out, the receptionist came up to her and apologize for her behavior and I remember her telling me that she had guilt and shame in her eyes and she accepted her apology. Later that day, I came home from school after I had taken my AP Psychology test, I was feeling down because I knew that I had not done well and it changed my mood and aura for the rest of the day. When she came home, I talked about it with her and told her about my day and we talked about my AP Psychology test and she told me “Nancy, if you don’t like how you did on your test, change your study habits, if you can’t change your attitude about it”. I knew I heard a quote similar to that, so I asked her about it and she said it was one of Maya Angelou’s quotes -“If you don’t like something change it.
If you can’t change it, change your attitude”. After our conversation and her giving me advice, I asked her how everything went, she told me the story and said “Nancy, your attitude is very important it can help you gain many things but can also keep you from getting things” I believe that the most important and significant decision I make and have control over is my choice of attitude. I believe that having a positive attitude and always being optimistic brings me joy and hope even though I might not have one every day. With a positive attitude and optimism, I believe that i can get through the hard times and that’s when I find out how strong I am.
