Carlene January 30, 2001 The End of Something The title, End of Something indicates the termination of Nick and Marjorie s relationship. Nick s lack of interest, although it may seem insignificant, destroyed their whole relationship. The end of this something ended first with his lack of interest in others. In the story, there were a couple of things that ended. The activity of the town, Nick s interest, and his relationship were things that ended. The description of the Hortons Bay leads the reader into the realization that all things come to an end.
Previously, the town was bustling of big saws and productive activity. Then all of a sudden the activity ends one year because of no logs. Because of this little factor, the rest of the town was completely deserted. This is analogous to Nick and Marjorie s relationship. Nick lack of interest and an internal void is what caused his whole relationship to crumble. He became unable to connect with people physically and emotionally.
Nick and Marjorie were sitting on the blanket without touching each other. He reverts Marjorie s statements into a cause for argument. Because he doesn t feel happy with himself, he destroys his relationship with others. Bill s appearance at the end reasserts that Marjorie s is not to blame for Nick s behavior. Nick ignores and feels annoyed by Bill not because of anything that Bill has done but he has an internal problem that is expressed externally.
Marjorie doesn t seem like she deserves Nick s treatment. Marjorie has been very loving to Nick and seems very happy with him. On page 32 it says, Marjorie loved to fish with Nick. She also senses that there is something wrong with Nick. On page 33 she question Nick and asks, What s the matter. Therefore, Marjorie hasn t merited this cruel treatment from Nick and hasn t done anything to contribute to this behavior..
