Changing your Social Class The process by which individuals and groups are ranked in a more or less enduring hierarchy of status is known as stratification. According to Raymond Murray social stratification is a horizontal division of society in to higher and lower social units. Every society is divided into more or less distinct groups. Even the most primitive societies had some form of social stratification. My social class had changed suddenly. A man who gets sudden wealth and change of social class does not have to bother about the means he has to adopt for its acquisition.
I may be afraid of the law of the land and censure of the people. If I can take care of these two impediments then there is nothing which can deter me. If I do not take care of them then I would be antisocial. I am not easily accepted in this society. Moreover, this change has given rise to yet another great desire-the desire for fame. I know it that if wealth can lead me to fame then I wont be considered a threat to society.
When I pay the price that fame demands I become great. Society will not only respect me but will also be proud of me. The fords, the Rockefellers, the tatas, all belong to this category. They are an asset to society. If the desire for fame is at the root of philanthropy in some, it is in some, a force that compels to hard work. A man who works hard for the sake of his family cannot hope to acquire any fame. He feels that he has a duty to perform and discharge it with all the sincerity he can command.
If he can earn a word of appreciation from his people, he feels completely rewarded which in turn acts as an incentive for yet harder work. I am not the same person as I was in lower class. My opportunities have changed suddenly. I dont remember where or when but the impression it has created is lasting. I am in my heaven. I am free of economic constraints.
Food, shelter and clothing are no longer a problem. I do not have to worry about the bills. I do not have to carry my lunch packets to work place as I can afford food at any costliest restaurants. Since my opportunities are different and therefore my priorities too have changed. I have developed a thinking process of my own. I am concerned about society and want to eradicate some social evils like poverty, illness and ignorance among the low social class.
In my health system everything from consultation to heart transplantation will be free if one is poor. The workers in Nickel and Dimed receive almost no benefits — no overtime pay, no retirement funds, and no health insurance. This is a separate problem. Mere changes in salary and funds can not solve the problem. It requires to be addressed by state. After years of changes in policy and government nothing has changes as such in reality.
Problems of workers are as such on the same ground. State should provide complete economic freedom, where a person will have opportunity to develop his own genius. He will not have to worry about his expenditure. He does not have to worry about his and familys health, education of his children and any other requirement. It will be state who will pay for each of these things. That will be the heaven we dream of.
In my changed life and elevated social class everyone is free from economic constraints. There are no thieves, no pick pockets, no robberies and no police. Life will then be an endless odyssey into unmitigated joy and unalloyed happiness..
