Entertainment is when the mind becomes intrigued with a book or movie that captures your attention in a story. One of the ways a person or an audience stays interested is if they feel they can relate to a situation in a world that they only hear about in movies or read in a book. Both of these ways of entertainment can receive attention, but only one can truly bring you into another world, one that you never thought could exist until you started turning the pages and finishing the chapters. When you watch a movie, it doesn’t compare to opening your mind to the imagination of reading a book. Reading a book creates a much more vast and creative image in ones mind, as opposed to watching movies, which requires a very limited use of your imagination.
When watching a movie, people tend to let their mind go blank and stare idly at the big screen, waiting and watching for the actors in the movie to tell the viewers what is going to happen next. For example, anyone can watch a movie for entertainment purposes and feel just as unintelligent and unenlightened afterwards. The movie does the thinking for you. All the viewer has to do is follow along and make sure you don’t blink too much at the wrong moment or have to go to the bathroom at the climax of the movie. Another disadvantage when going to the movies is not being able to pause the movie at your leisure. Movies tend to not leave very much to the imagination of the viewer. However, books are great because you don’t have to worry about the things you typically would worry about when going to movies. When you decide to read a book, a book a friend has read before and has thoroughly enjoyed or one you just picked out at the used bookstore, you have the luxury of being able to stop at any point in the book at your
leisure. Sometimes people enjoy just reading for a little bit of time before they go to bed at night and end up spending weeks on a single book or series.
Now, even when watching a movie at home you have the convenience of a DVD player so that you can press the pause button whenever you need to. However, what if you are like myself and lose the remote often? You have to search around while the movie is still going, find the remote, then pause, go to the bathroom, rewind, play, and then you can get back to sitting down and enjoying your movie.
There is a reason people have trouble and “can’t put the book down.” When reading a great book, the reader really gets into the story and has to keep reading and reading to satisfy his or her hunger for more adventure, more excitement, more drama, mystery or action. When an author describes a scene in a book, the reader uses their imagination to get a visual picture in his or her mind of what is going on in the story. It is very entertaining for the reader to imagine the hero of the story fighting back dozens of warriors and wizards with great power while he tries valiantly to rescue his wife from deadly hands.
When someone is reading a book as opposed to viewing a movie, it requires you to use your mind and improves your ability to grasp concepts of how writing is done. Reading books also increases your vocabulary and your understanding of words in your language and different ways to use them you may not have thought of before. Therefore, in some ways makes you a more intelligent and more literate person than you were before. Being able to put a book down whenever something comes up is not a luxury that everyone has when watching a movie he or she paid eight dollars to see once.
In conclusion, when an individual is reading a book, he or she is going along right there with the character and understanding what the character is thinking. The reader really gets into the book and uses every part of his or her imagination for conjuring the world around in the book. It’s a sort of rapture for the readers mind. After that book is done, it leaves you with the craving of wanting that sequel so you can read and enjoy many more hours of entertainment.
